The Nebraska football team is expecting a relatively quiet National Signing Day, thanks to locking up most of its class in December. One player the team had hoped to lure into Lincoln was Eugene Asante. The linebacker out of Virginia is the younger brother of former Husker Larry Asante. While there are reports that the elder brother attempted to get his sibling to see everything the Cornhuskers had to offer, it appears they are losing out on yet another linebacker. Analysts are also .

Nebraska struggles getting defensive stars

To be clear, the Huskers got in on Eugene Asante relatively late in the game. They gave him his official visit right around the December signing day, realizing that they weren‘t landing some of the other linebackers they had been targeting for months.

That could be a big reason why it appears that the four-star prospect is going to be signing with a school other than Nebraska. That is despite the fact that he did have the Huskers in a not long before signing day.

Recruiting experts have been thinking Asante would likely stay close to home for a little while now. It appears that family ties simply weren‘t enough to lure him toward the Nebraska football team and out of his home region. The team he is expected to sign with might be a bit of a surprise. The rumors surrounding why he is choosing his new team are quite inflammatory, as a matter of fact.

Eugene Asante headed to North Carolina?

While it will still be several hours, almost the entire day, before he makes it official, there have been rumblings that the linebacker is going to be signing with the North Carolina Tarheels.

Most believe this would be a pretty big switch from where he had first been thought to be leaning with Virginia Tech. At the same time, Asante canceled his visit with Nebraska in order to check out Chapel Hill, so it‘s clear he‘s had them in the front of his mind for a while now.

Why North Carolina is now the expected top team is a bit odd, though, if the rumors can be believed. Whispers started on Wednesday morning (February 6), that a former Hokie who is transferring away from the school had badmouthed the coaching staff to the point where the linebacker decided against attending.

That former Virginia Tech player has since come out and claimed no conversation badmouthing the program ever happened. He even posted part of a conversation to shoot the rumblings down.

Despite going the extra mile to be properly quoted, the tide seems to be pushing Eugene Asante toward North Carolina over the Nebraska football team and Virginia Tech.
