Adrian Martinez is making a strong case to win the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award

With the season coming to an end this week for most of the teams in the Big Ten conference, it‘s time to start thinking about the annual Big Ten football awards – including freshman of the year. Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez is not only in the running, he has a resume that should make him the clear-cut winner. Here’s why.

He‘s the leader

While there are several outstanding freshman doing well in the Big Ten, Adrian Martinez should claim this award just on the fact that he looks well beyond his years as a quarterback. To step in and take over a team as a true freshman and play as well as he did should give Martinez the edge over other front runners like Rondale Moore of Purdue, and Maryland’s Anthony McFarland.

Numbers don’t lie

Martinez has passed for over 2,300 yards, 15 touchdowns and has a passer rating of 139.6 heading into the Huskers finale against the Iowa Hawkeyes. That is pretty impressive for a true freshman.

Stiff competition

While Martinez has a great case for winning the award, Rondale Moore and Anthony McFarland are making a strong case for themselves. Moore had a huge game last week against Ohio State and has passed the 1,000 yard rush mark, while Moore has become an instant threat outside for the Boliermakers.

Beyond expectations

When the Huskers recruited Martinez, they knew he was good, but not this good! If this kid stays healthy, he is going to be one of the top QB in all of college football. He is arguably developing into the toughest dual threat QB in the nation.

Strong finish

Wins and losses should have nothing to do with personal awards, but unfortunately people do look at the overall team performance. After a 0-6 start, Martinez is looking to finish the season with a 5-1 mark, that is if the Huskers defeat Iowa On Nov. 23.
